Rough winds

While April was on the whole a good month to be in Achiltibuie, May has been decidedly more hit and miss. It has been a lot more windy and blustery than I would expect in May and I found myself thinking that this irregular weather might be the result of climate change. And then I thought of this line: "rough winds do shake the darling buds of May". So, as long ago as 1609 even Shakespeare observed that May does not necessarily mean warm and balmy days in spring.

But in spite of the wind and the short lives of blossom, we do still have the most stunning rhododendron in bloom in the garden. But why take it from me? Book your stay at the Loan now and see what it inspires you to see and remember...

Sonnet 18

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate:

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

And summer's lease hath all too short a date;

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,

And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;

And every fair from fair sometime declines,

By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;

But thy eternal summer shall not fade,

Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st;

Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade,

When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st:

So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,

So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

William Shakespeare
